About Gesher's Residential Services Program
Gesher Human Services maintains residential community homes staffed with trained direct-care professionals, who are available 24 hours 7 days a week to assist participants with all needs. Each home is purposefully designed, inside and out, to present as a single-family dwelling.
Gesher residential homes are located in Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield, Southfield, and Oak Park.
About This Volunteer Opportunity
As a volunteer Residential Direct Support Companion, you will work under the supervision of a House Manager and/or Direct Care Professionals to engage and support participants with mental illnesses in developing daily living skills.
What we ask of you in this role:
• Provide support and encouragement to improve participants’ daily living skills, vocational tasks, hobbies, and social/community engagement.
• Assist participants with domestic tasks, including cooking, cleaning, and recreational activities.
• Understand individual participant goals as outlined in their service plans.
• Help facilitate access to recreational, cultural, and religious experiences.
• May offer physical support to participants with mobility, balance, or strength limitations, as needed.
• Provide verbal and/or written notes for staff on participant activities and goal progression.
• Act as a positive role model for members, staff, and fellow volunteers, embodying Gesher’s mission and core values.
Shifts available: 9 a.m. to Noon, Noon to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
You might be a good fit for this role if you:
• Are age 18 and older.
• Have the ability to assist clients who have mobility, balance, strength and/or physical limitations.
• Can perform the duties of this role, including the ability to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers. Light to moderate lifting is also required.
• Can commit to sharing 18 to 24 hours over three months.
• CPR/First Aid certification a plus but not required.
