Role Summary

Temporary Shelter Volunteers support the safe, compassionate, and efficient operation of a disaster shelter that houses individuals and families displaced by emergencies. Volunteers help create a welcoming environment, assist with basic needs, and ensure residents receive essential services during a stressful and uncertain time. This role is hands‑on, people‑focused, and essential to maintaining a stable, supportive shelter environment. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Guest Support & Hospitality Greet residents as they arrive and help them get settled
  • Provide information about shelter rules, schedules, and available services
  • Offer general assistance to individuals and families throughout their stay.
  • Maintain a calm, respectful, and trauma‑informed approach
  • Registration & Intake Assistance Help residents complete check‑in forms
  • Direct guests to sleeping areas, restrooms, and common spaces
  • Identify urgent needs and notify shelter supervisors
  • Dormitory & Common Area Support Assist with setting up cots, bedding, and personal space
  • Keep shared areas clean, organized, and safe
  • Monitor for issues such as overcrowding, safety concerns, or conflicts
  • Report concerns promptly to shelter leadership4. Meal & Feeding Support Help distribute meals and snacks
  • Assist with serving lines, cleanup, and maintaining sanitation
  • Support residents with dietary needs when possible5. Supplies & Logistics Assistance Distribute hygiene kits, blankets, and other essential items
  • Help track inventory and restock supplies
  • Support setup and teardown of shelter equipment
  • Emotional Support & Community Care Offer a listening ear and compassionate presence
  • Help residents connect with mental health or medical staff when needed
  • Support children, older adults, and individuals with access or functional needs
  • Optional Specialized Support (if trained) Child-friendly space supervision
  • Pet shelter assistance
  • Language interpretation
  • Accessibility support
