Impact of Position: You will be one of the first faces people see when they visit Sloan Museum of Discovery which means you will help set the tone so that guests have an enjoyable and memorable experience of the museum.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Scan tickets as guests enter the exhibit space Ensure that all guests have a ticket for the museum Kindly remind guests that no food or drink is allow in the exhibit spaces Answers general questions or point guests towards Guest Services for answers

This position is for you if:

You consider yourself to be a “People-Person” You are comfortable talking with new people

You will succeed in this position if: 

You have knowledge on basic Sloan Museum/Flint history and current exhibits

Time Commitment: minimum of 3-4 hours once a week while the museum is open to the public

Orientation and Training: You will be taught how to scan tickets and be given updated information about new exhibits. No computer program skills or certain physical abilities are needed for this position.

Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that will provide building familiarization tours and an overview of volunteer-related policies and procedures. Volunteers will be asked to submit a criminal background check. Volunteers who do not agree to the background check will be refused assignment.

Impact of Position: You will assist in the administration of a visitor survey that will inform staff about the visitor experience at Sloan Museum of Discovery. Data will include information on the accessibility and usability of interactives and exhibits. Surveys are essential to understand if Sloan Museum is meeting its goals.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Approach visitors to fill out a survey Maintain orderly records of completed surveys

This position is for you if:

You are passionate about making positive changes You are comfortable following specific instructions

You will succeed in this position if:

You have experience with evaluations and surveys You are comfortable initiating conversations with new people

Time Commitment: minimum 1 - 2 hours a week any day the museum is open

Orientation and Training: You will be trained on how to appropriately administer a paper and pencil survey so the accurate data is collected.

Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that will provide building familiarization tours and an overview of  volunteer-related policies and procedures. Impact of the Position: Mazes & Brain Gamers engage with visitors of all ages, encourage visitors to ask questions, try new things, and expand their thinking. You will help ensure that this temporary exhibit is clean and interactives are ready for new visitors throughout the entirety of your shift.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Engage in friendly, courteous, and welcoming interactions with visitors Monitor visitor experiences while ensuring the exhibit is clean and running smoothly Perform short demonstrations of the interactives throughout the exhibit Assist with the initial clean and startup the exhibit when possible before the museum opens

You enjoy sharing your love for learning with others You are friendly and approachable You enjoy leaving a space nicer and brighter than when you entered

 

You will succeed in this position if: 

You feel comfortable providing directions to new people You are a self-starter that can work independently You can take initiative during quieter moments to reset and clean parts of the exhibit

 

Time Commitment: 3-4 hours shifts while the museum is open to the public (mornings and weekends needed most)

 

Orientation and Training: Additional training for Mazes and Brain Gamers include an overview of the exhibit docent guide and an in-depth guided tour of the exhibit by a member of the Education & Outreach Team. You will also be trained by the Exhibits Team on how to properly reset and perform small routine cleanings of the exhibit.

 

Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that provide a building familiarization tour and an overview of volunteer related policies and procedures. Volunteers will be asked to submit to a criminal background check. Volunteers who do not agree to the background check will be refused assignment.

Impact of Position: You will provide support during special events hosted by Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium. Your support of staff during these events will help create meaningful experiences for guests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Set up and take down of chairs, tables, linens, etc. Ensure that guests stay in appropriate areas of the buildings Ensure no food and drink leaven designated areas

This position is for you if:

You enjoy customer service roles You are comfortable talking with new people You prefer hands-on tasks

You will succeed in this position if:

You consider yourself to be flexible You are physically able to lift 20lbs or more You are comfortable standing for more than 1 hour at a time

Time Commitment: 4-5 hours monthly as needed (scheduling occurs at least 14 days in advanced)

Orientation and Training: Each special event is different so you will receive an email with information about the program and your role in it. You will need to arrive early for every event to receive a “run of show” training.

Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that provide a building familiarization tour and an overview of volunteer related policies and procedures. Impact of Position: You will provide support during special programs hosted by Longway Planetarium.
“Special Programs” are defined as programs/events held by the Planetarium Department outside of their regular shows. Your support of staff during these programs will help create meaningful experiences for guests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Greet guests, scan their tickets, and/or help them find their seats as they enter the planetarium Interact with guests and answer questions at Star Parties and other special programs Assist staff and presenters during programs as needed

This position is for you if:

You are comfortable in initiating conversations with others You own your own telescope, but this is NOT required You enjoy customer service roles

You will succeed in this position if:

You consider yourself to be flexible You consider yourself an amateur astronomer or have a willingness to learn more about astronomy You have reliable transportation for programs not held at Longway Planetarium

Time Commitment: 3-4 hours monthly as needed (scheduling occurs at least 14 days in advanced)

Orientation and Training: Each special program is different so you will receive an email with information about the program and your role in it. You will need to arrive early for every program to receive a “run of show” training. You will be encouraged to attend other Longway events and shows to expand their astronomical knowledge.

Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that will provide building familiarization tours and an overview of  volunteer-related policies and procedures. Impact of Position: Gallery Guides honor visitor knowledge and experience opportunities to connect with museum interactives and expand ideas. Engaging with visitors of all ages, Gallery Guides encourage visitors to ask questions, try new things, and expand their thinking.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Engage in friendly, courteous, and welcoming interactions with visitors Monitor visitor experience while ensuring the museum galleries are clean and running smoothly Perform short demonstrations, tours, and activities throughout the museum

This position is for you if:

You enjoy sharing your love for learning with others You are friendly and approachable You enjoy interacting with new people of all ages, aptitudes, and backgrounds

You will succeed in this position if:

You feel comfortable initiating and holding conversations with new people You enjoy working collaboratively in a team environment You have good time management skills to thrive in when the museum is busy & take initiative during quieter moments to focus on tasks like ensuring that the galleries are neat and tidy

Time Commitment: minimum 3-4 hours once a week while the museum is open to the public

Orientation and Training: Additional training for Volunteer Gallery Guides include overview of the Floor Staff handbook and an in-depth guided tour of the gallery spaces and closets. Your first Gallery Guide Shift will allow you to train side by side with one of our Floor Staff Members.

Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that will provide building familiarization tours and an overview of  volunteer-related policies and procedures. Impact of Position: You will help ensure galleries are safe, clean, and ready for all of our visitors. The maintenance and cleanliness of museum gallery space is of the utmost importance to ensure the both staff and visitors have a safe, welcoming, and secure environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Clean galleries and interactives Ensure that exhibits are working properly Help with the installation of temporary exhibits (requires longer hours) Assist with cleaning and maintenance of 1966 Buick Wildcat and other special projects as needed

This position is for you if:

Enjoy leaving a space nicer and brighter than when you entered Have an eye for detail Like to work with your hands

You will succeed in this position if:

You follow directions well You have experience with basic hand tools you are flexible and patient

Time Commitment: minimum 2-4 hour shift 1 day a week (preferably Mondays)

Orientation and Training: You will be required to complete safety training and will be trained one on one to perform any duties they are assigned.
