Volunteer: Mom mentor or mentor team (4) member

If you are a mom, you are qualified!! Children don't come with a "how-to" manual but rather, you create the manual as raise your children. Now that you have all this expertise, share it with a new mom. You've been there! And you can encourage a young mom on her student parent journey with Hope for Single Moms.

Hope for Single Moms removes single mom families from high-risk poverty situations and gives them the tools they need to become economically independent. One of the ways we do that is to provide our families with a team of support while the mom is on her student parent journey. Part of that support is having an experienced mom, or team of experienced moms, paired up with a single mom family. Gather your three best friends to laugh, cry, hug and encourage single mom.

A team of four means each woman takes one week a month to check in with her "mom" and make a difference. There is a mentor training for some of the details about conveying a need to Hope for Single Moms.

This is great for a women's bible study to be a mom team. Or the women in a church group can be part of a mom team, while the men and single ladies can be the rest of her life assistance team. Because we all know life can throw anyone curves.

Volunteers need to consent to and pass a background check.

Volunteer: Admin to Executive Director

Hope for Single Moms is growing! And that's a great thing because it means we can transform more single mom families in West Michigan. Hope for Single Moms removes single mom families from high-risk poverty situations and gives them the tools they need to become economically independent. We do that by helping single moms to get the career education they need to provide well for their families and find a path to a better, more fulfilling life; thus breaking the cycle of poverty.

If you’ve ever thought you want to leave a legacy of caring, then Hope for Single Moms has a great opportunity for you! You can work from home, responding to emails from single moms and volunteers, as well as follow-up with them. The more you know about Canva, or a similar graphic design tool, the more opportunity you help us meet the increasing needs we get from the community.

There would also be set hours each day where you will have phone calls forwarded to you.

This is currently a volunteer position but can lead to part-time paid employment, depending on your interest and availability. A paid position will include picking up print jobs, going to the post office and other smaller errands.

I

f you’ve ever thought you want to leave a legacy of caring, then Hope for Single Moms has a great opportunity for you! We make it possible for single moms to get the career education they need to provide well for their families and find a path to a better, more fulfilling life; thus breaking the cycle of poverty.

There are over 29,000 single mom families in Kent County alone; nearly half live in poverty. Giving these families an opportunity for a better life takes a village; and board members are  part of that village. As a board member you will have a front row seat to these family transformations, as well as cast the vision for future growth and opportunities for HSM.

HOPE FOR SINGLE MOMS has grown from a start-up in 2016 to a respected changemaker in West Michigan, raising over $100,000 in 2022. In our six year history, we have four graduates and provided financial assistance to three additional single mom families.  More information regarding our program is available on our website at https://hsmgr.org/

Our goal is for every child to thrive and every single mom to become financially self-sufficient — first in West Michigan, and then, throughout the state. In order to achieve these objectives, we need to develop our programmatic impact and our organizational capacity. We are seeking volunteer leaders, who have a passion to help single mom families thrive, to join our dynamic board of directors.

Board members are actively involved in organizational governance, have the fiduciary responsibility of the organization and are expected to attend six-one hour bi-monthly board meetings, as well as personally donate. You will also receive training as a leader. You are the agency's biggest cheerleaders, and should invite your circle of influence to join you in changing the lives of two generations.

If you’re interested in using your expertise, perspective, experience and leadership to help give these families a better life, let’s continue the conversation.

A potential board member packet is available by emailing info@hsmgr.org

Please submit a resume with your request. Thanks. Looking forward to connecting with you!

We are look for caring compassionate people who are willing to serve people who are in the most vulnerable times of their life. We are looking for someone to be a set of helping hands to aid our caregiver from the hours of 4:00pm to 9:00pm. Those are the most difficult hours of the day for our staff, so to have another person there would be very helpful. Our home is just like any other home in that it needs cleaned, it needs someone to greet anyone that comes through the door, it needs yard work done, etc. Having someone volunteer to fulfill those household duties would allow our caregivers to better focus on our guests.

Volunteer: Volunteer Visitor - FCI Milan

Prisoner Visitation and Support (PVS) is the only organization authorized by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Defense to visit any prisoner in the Federal and Military prison systems. The primary focus is on seeing those prisoners with an acute need for human contact -- those prisoners without regular visits, those serving long sentences who are far from home, those in solitary confinement and on death row, and those who are frequently transferred from prison to prison. PVS visitors let the prisoners set the agenda for what they discuss. Common concerns are: lack of contact with family, untreated medical problems, work or educational plans upon release, current events, literature, etc. This listing is for volunteers that are interested in visiting at FCI Milan, a federal correctional institution in Milan, Michigan.

Each CASA volunteer advocates on behalf of one child or family at a time, as opposed to the full caseloads managed by DHHS workers and lawyer-guardians ad litem. These volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child or sibling group is placed in a safe, permanent home.

For many of these children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives.

Requirements for CASA volunteers:

At least 21 years old Completion of necessary background and reference checks, including fingerprinting Interview Completion of a minimum of 40 hours of pre-service training Availability for court appearances (advance notice is provided) A commitment to the CASA program until your first case is closed

Time Commitment:

A CASA Volunteer works with one child or sibling group at a time and meets with them in person every 7-10 days. On average, our volunteers spend between 10-20 hours a month on a case, which consists of visits, travel time, report writing, court hearings, Family Team Meetings, talking with counselors and teachers, etc. A CASA commits to advocating for the child(ren) until permanency is achieved. On average, this process takes about 18 months but can last several years.

Court hearings are usually every 90 days, and you would know in advance the date of the hearing (the following hearing is scheduled at each hearing, so usually you’ll have 90 days notice).

A CASA is also required to complete 12 hours of in-service training annually, which can be done through various ways, found on your own or trainings that we provide.

Volunteer: Fair Housing Testers- Kent & Muskegon County Seniors Needed!

What is a Tester?

As a tester, you play the role of a home seeker - a person who is looking for a housing unit in which to live. Testers must be at least 18 years old, objective, careful observers, accurate reporters, and truthful and credible witnesses.  View the Qualifications for Testers for more information on what characteristics are important in a tester. Testers are paid a small stipend and can be fully remote!

Become a Tester

Our housing tester program is an interesting way to learn about the community and get first hand experience with fair housing.  Testers play the role of a home seeker and participate in apartment showings, open houses, and other experiences to help us monitor fair housing practices.  Testers are of vital importance to the advocacy and research programs of the Fair Housing Center.  Without a vast and diverse pool of volunteer testers, the Fair Housing Center would be drastically limited in our ability to conduct research and investigate claims of illegal discrimination.

What is Testing?

Testing is a term used to describe the process of checking the housing market to determine the nature and extent of discriminatory treatment practiced against various home seekers. For example, in matched pair testing two or more individuals, similar in every respect other than the variable being tested, are sent to the same sales or rental office. Testers keep careful notes as to what transpires, and then record their experience on a standard report form. Differences in the treatment of testers often form the bases for successful resolution of a housing discrimination complaint.

Why Testing?

The testing process has been consistently supported by federal courts as a legitimate and necessary method to identify practices of unlawful housing discrimination. In West Michigan, successful complaints filed by claimants have been based upon evidence obtained by Fair Housing Center testers.

How Do I Become a Tester?

If you are interested in taking on the challenging and rewarding role of a tester, email us to learn about upcoming tester training dates.  To register for a tester training via phone, or for more information about testing, contact Sarah Brandt at (616) 438-5712 or 1-866-389-FAIR.

Volunteer: Volunteer Kidney Companion

KIDNEY COMPANIONS MUST:

Be 18 years or older

Have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation

Have a flexible schedule to provide transportation, if needed

Attend volunteer orientation. The orientation is divided into 3 sessions each lasting 1-2 hours.

Have COVID vaccine and Annual Influenza vaccine

WHAT DOES THE ROLE INCLUDE?  As with any friend or family member going through a major health crisis, a transplant support person [kidney companion] provides emotional and physical support and advocacy for the patient.

Prior to transplant, they help drive patients to medical appointments at the transplant center; this may be up to 3-4 times per year.

They help at the time of hospitalization for transplant, including receiving medical education and providing emotional support.

At home, particularly as patients have a lifting restriction for several weeks post-surgery, they assist with housekeeping if needed, grocery shopping, day-to-day errands, and general emotional support. This level of in-home support is expected for 6-8 weeks post-transplant.

After transplant, they help drive the patients to medical appointments. In the immediate post-transplant period, they may be asked to drive the patient to medical appointments as often as 2-3 times per week for the first month and then 1 time per week for the second month.

At the medical appointments, especially after the transplant, the kidney companion will also play a key role in supporting the patient. At these appointments, patients can be overwhelmed by the amount of information given and medications prescribed, and the kidney companion will be critical in assisting the patient with all of these changes and medication management.

WHAT THE ROLE DOES NOT INCLUDE:

Kidney companions do not provide medical care, nursing care, wound care nor are expected to provide any financial support. Our patients already have a dedicated team of nurses, doctors, and social workers, both with the transplant center and dialysis center, who are primarily responsible for the patient’s medical care, insurance coverage and applications, appointment times, etc.

Volunteer: YEAR-ROUND VOLUNTEER NEEDS

Volunteer Opportunities: Horse Leader, Sidewalker, Tacking, Grooming and Barn Maintenance, Haycrew (Horse care and feeding), Special Events (Fundraisers, Easter with the Equest Bunny, Holiday Horse Show, Horsin Around at the Derby, Horses & Hands program…), Facility maintenance (repairs, weeding, flowers, painting, cleaning pastures, etc.), Administration (data entry, bulk mailing, filing, etc.)

Community Outreach: service projects are also available throughout the year for interested groups such as Boy/Girls Scouts, 4-H, Youth Leadership, Business groups, Church groups, & Schools. Orientation and Training is not necessary but volunteer registration is required. To learn about current projects – contact Equest Center’s Volunteer Coordinator.

Orientation and Training are necessary for the following volunteer opportunities.

Horse leader/handler primary responsibility is to the horse, i.e., prepare the horse for class, maintain safety spacing, and help the horse follow the directions of the rider during class.

Sidewalkers physically assist the rider (during riding, mounting and dismounting), help the rider guide their horse during the lesson, and assist the rider in following the directions of the instructor as necessary. The amount of assistance is dependent on each rider’s abilities. Sidewalkers must be at least 14 years old.

The Tacking, Grooming and Barn Maintenance assistants are the “behind the scenes” volunteers stationed in the barn preparing horses for lessons, leading horses from and to the pastures, feeding, grooming and tacking, keeping the barn area clean. (volunteers must meet age requirements for individual jobs in this area) A Lead Volunteer will assist with tack changes and horse turn out.
