Today, 60 percent of Detroit youth under five live in poverty, and by third grade only 14 percent of these children are reading at grade level. Reading Partners and Brilliant Detroit are working together to harness the power of community to provide these young students with access to high-quality learning opportunities. Are you ready to help a student become a lifelong learner?
Volunteer roles & responsibilities: Give as little as one hour per week to provide critical literacy support to a Detroit student. Volunteer from the comfort of your own home -- you will be connecting with your student virtually through our online Reading Partners Connects platform! A laptop or desktop computer and reliable wifi are required. Volunteering takes place on Monday through Thursday from 5 pm to 7 pm. Volunteers can choose one or two days per week to volunteer! Anyone 14+ can volunteer, and all volunteers 18+ must pass a background check. SVSF runs programs Monday through Friday, generally during the day with some evening opportunities available too. From hands-on interactive exhibits, regular themed open-house style activities, and special events for families and adults, we are the place to be in Muskegon for continuous fun! Duties: This position assists the Programming Department with all things Education! This includes working in the STEM center interacting with visitors, and assisting with Friday Family Fun nights, school groups, and other programming or education activities. Work Schedule: STEM Center volunteer hours are during the day when the Center is open typically between 11 and 4 pm. Friday Family Fun Nights are once a month on Friday’s after 5 pm in October, November, March, and April. School groups are held during open hours, but other programs and educational activities vary. Hours are flexible but generally fall in a 2-4 hour block of time. Additional training and orientation may apply. Responsibilities: 1. Responsibilities vary, but may include: o Instructing visitors on program activities o Cleaning/organizing STEM Center after school groups leave o Aiding self-guided school groups to find their way through the exhibits o Engaging visitors with interactive exhibit pieces 2.
